Psalm 27:1. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

These days, in one swipe of a thumb across my phone screen, my eyes will see a heartwarming story about a puppy rescue and learn about more lives lost in another unnecessary shooting. It’s jarring. Within seconds, my emotions roil from happiness to horror. It feels as though horror, worry, fear, and anger occur more often. News these days seems overwhelmingly bad. But the words of David in this psalm reorient my perception of the state of the world. Regardless of how powerful evil might seem, the Lord is the stronghold of our existence. Even if it’s beyond my comprehension, the Lord is present in all things and the Lord’s light pierces all darkness. What we see and experience is only a fraction of the bigger picture. This gives me the courage to have hope for our present — and for our future. The Lord guides us. Whom shall we fear?
