John 19:40. They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it with the spices in linen cloths.

The tenderness and the dignity with which Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus handle Jesus’s body illustrates their devotion and love for him. We are told that they brought one hundred pounds of spices, an astounding and lavish amount, to care for their friend’s remains before they laid him to rest. Just days before Mary lavished an excess of perfume to anoint Jesus as she said goodbye. It was all that she had.

Joseph and Nicodemus and Mary loved Jesus.

And their love for Jesus called forth the best from them. All they had.How does my love for Jesus call forth the best from me? How will I honor what he has done for me? How tenderly will I hold my suffering Lord?

All that we have and all that we offer

Comes from a heart both frightened and free.

Take what we bring now and give what we need.

All done in his name.

Blessed Jesus, grant me the courage and the grace to offer only my best for you today, tomorrow and always.

-Faithfully, The Rev. Lex Breckinridge
