At least two witnesses are required by law at every wedding. These two witnesses are usually members of the wedding party; they will sign the necessary documents before the service.

The best man is expected to be generally helpful to everyone, especially to the groom. Unless otherwise planned, the best man is also responsible for presentation of the ring(s) to the clergy during the wedding ceremony.

The maid or matron of honor accompanies the bride down the aisle and helps the bride with her bouquet, Prayer Book, and the like.
